| On Friday morning my battered old Toyota refused to do anything other than click quietly when I turned they key. Granted this is not so surprising when one considers that the beast has over 300,000 miles on it and is still original parts (mostly). Being one of the great procrastinators of our time, I did not do anything to it until today and I have narrowed the possibilities down to two: the starter ist kaput, oder, der Batterie ist kaput. The battery is out and charging so I should know by the end of the day today. I am going to relax with some kava while it charges, no need to rush into any other useful tasks or anything... zzzzz | ||||||

Surfing one of my favorite websites this morning. Today's favorite quote: FEAR Until you have the courage to lose sight of the shore, you will not know the terror of being forever lost at sea I love that website. |

I started the dry season ritual of pumping water up the thirty-foot embankment of the canal and into my backyard this weekend. Before I could do this I had to dig a three-foot deep trench through dry and compacted shell to repair my pipe where #%&$*%@#$ Brighthouse cut it while extending cable to the house down the street. Dry, compacted shell is just a little more yielding than concrete so Saturday was pick-ax day. I could have used a troop of dwarven sappers and/or high explosives. While the ground put up one hell of a fight, I eventually won. On Sunday I celebrated my victory by flooding the back yard to an average depth of five inches, I could hear my oak trees veritably singing with joy. I think the Rain Gods like to toy with me though because just like last year when I go to the work of setting up the pump it starts to rain. The rest of Brevard is dry as a bone but it rained over half an inch in our neighborhood last night. Go figure. Lastly, where did the weekend go..? I want it back |

| Somehow I have gone from working on obscure research in a corner of the lab to technical lead on the company's primary crop. I am not quite certain how this happened. | ||||||

| Good fishing trip today. We launched from Sebastian, headed out the inlet and fished in the Atlantic for a few hours then came in with the tide change and fished the flats until 11:00. Lots of fishing, not much catching. No matter, I have plenty of fish in the freezer and I release everything unless I am going to eat it anyway. After the morning on the briny I was treated to an excellent lunch by my hosts after which I came home and napped for the rest of the afternoon in my backyard. I really can not imagine a better day. | ||||||||

post-weekend report... Flooding problem temporarily fixed. I need to install a new sink, cabinet, and associated plumbing. Of course I need to build the cabinet first. This could take a wee while. No progress made on aquarium installation. Partly because the weather turned nasty and partly because of my aforementioned discovery of Kona Porter. Back to the grind - I need to up my caffeine intake this week so I can accomplish something useful in the evenings after work. More java, less kava... or perhaps I should try Yerba Matte? |

| I just discovered Kona Brewing Company's Pipeline Porter. Brilliant! I downed the whole six-pack and I am beginning to doubt the wisdom of this strategy. So tasty though... | ||||||||

| The weekend is finally here, time to unwind and relax... uh, no. Lots of repair projects around ye olde pirate base to take care of, including a flood of biblical proportions coming from beneath the kitchen sink. Hopefully I will have time to clear space for my aquariums in the front vestibule this weekend. I find that I am very much wanting to get back in to that hobby. | ||||||||

| Kava is the king of all legal mind altering drinks, one just needs to be able to drink what tastes like a cup of mud water to be transported to a very happy place. Well, maybe three or eight cups to start with, but unlike alcohol, the more often that one imbibes, the less it takes to produce the desired effect. The Fish highly recommends this traditional drink from the South Pacific. Check with me first for laboratory tested procedures though. Also if anyone wants to research this further The Fish recommends Getting Stoned With Savages by J. Maarten Troost and I have several peer-reviewed journal articles that I can share if requested. | ||||||||

From Getting Stoned With Savages by J. Maarten Troost: On the Fijian Island of Tannu one of the first things that the natives asked of Captain Cook: "Do you eat people too?" For some reason I find this little tidbit of trivia immensely amusing. |

| October was a month of extremes and contrasts. In the beginning of the month there was hope and anticipation which reached its zenith at the shindig on the second weekend of the month. From there it was a steady downward spiral punctuated by a few plummets. The details are protracted and rather boring to the reader, but let me only say that I think I finally realize the foolishness of optimism. Now I'll contradict myself and say that perhaps November will be a better month. | ||||||

| I was up to my arse in flood waters most of the day (literally) ferrying supplies and sundries to friends that were stranded by rising waters. The old home place is high and dry, if it ever flooded all of the county would be underwater, but the well has become contaminated with surface waters. I know this because the water coming from the tap is the color if tea. hopefully it will clear itself out, otherwise we're going to need to have another well put in. This will be a very expensive bummer. Anyway, after a day of wading I am back at my weekday quarters in Fellsmere, sipping a rum and coke and listening to Jimmy Buffett. | ||||||||

The younger brother and I spent the day perusing several purveyors of fine piscatorial merchandise, and lucked into three very favorable purchases. Of course these purchases will have to be deducted from the grocery budget this week, but who needs food anyway? On the subject of food... "Chef Alahondra has prepared a delightful repast, Chilean Sea Bass I believe..." Actually the younger brother has fried a mess of wild caught tilapia fillets (and one whiting) with sides of homemade hush puppies, deep fried potato medallions, and a new creation using left over yellow grits, shredded coconut and the left over breading from the fish. I've sneaked a taste of each as it's come out of the fryer and the smell pervading the house is truly amazing. I just finished bathing two of my three dogs. One hundred pounds of canine that is as averse to water as any cat is not an easy thing to bathe and always ends with as much water on the bathroom floor as in the tub. The pups do smell much better afterward though so I guess it is worth it. The one that was so sick a couple weeks ago has made a full recovery for which I am very grateful. All that's left for the evening is eat and clean the kitchen and have a rum and coke before sleep time. Tomorrow begins another week... |
